Denmark to Norway

Our 1st port of call in Denmark was a harbour in Aabenraa, nosed right up to the waterfront in baking hot weather! Since the horrible wind & rain in southern Holland, the weather has been fantastic all the way up – surprisingly so! Averaging around 22 degrees and wall to wall sunshine – we have been lucky enough to drag the weather up with us. Anyway, Aabenraa is beautiful but expensive (as everywhere is in Scandinavia), in the main village street, we sampled a local brew, costing £10.80 for two glasses!! (Swiftly back to RV for a Lidl's vodka we purchased in Germany)

From there we moved from Jutland (the big island) to Funen over a nice, free bridge to stay on a campsite at Sandager Naes for a few days (yup, laundry/hoovering/cleaning/internet time again). NB: We're still wearing shorts & flip flops (even as I write this in Asele, Lapland). We had a wander round one day and bought 2 ice creams, 2 bags of crisps and 2 small packets of Haribo sweeties for..........wait for it...........£15!! Anyway, five days is enough to get everything done (including washing 'Arvey) so we moved on....

A lovely drive from Funen island to Sealand en route to Copenhagen, over the Great Belt Bridge (toll) – but with a shock at the far end turnpikes........a £121 toll!! Yikes, clean pants required! Now our plan was to do the Oresund (toll) bridge between Denmark & Sweden – but a rethink was now on the cards! Anyway, we found a small, free aires (in someones very large garden) at Munke Bjergby for the night and licked our wounds (with more Lidl vodka lol), but even then we had to retreat to the awning as it was too hot – yes I did say too hot! Well into 26/27 degrees and a burning sun (different to what we're used to in Spain)....

Ok, Copenhagen here we come.....stopping on a camper stop on the edge of town. On arrival there was a couple of campers parked up (it's a fenced off bit of a car park but has all amenities laid on, including a set of showers/toilets to die for) but no one to pay. Hmmm puzzling, undaunted we set up camp and began our daily chilling session. Later that night the chap who runs the place arrived and wouldn't take any money from us as he didn't officially open until the next day – yippeeee, on the winning side for a change! The next couple of days was spent visiting the sights and sounds of Copenhagen (with customary beer sampling naturally). Cycling round the town is a breeze thanks to the network of cycle lanes, so we were able to cover all the bits easily in a couple of days on our bikes– it's a lovely place with both old and new to see and well worth a visit.

Rethinking done, we headed up north to get the ferry between Helsingor (DK) and Helsingborg (S) as it is much cheaper than the bridge, plus my wife reminded me that Hamlets castle is at Helsingor and well worth a visit. That settled we headed off through the centre of Copenhagen – eeeek! Remember the network of cycle lanes I mentioned? A nightmare to drive through/round/over, 'cos there are cyclists everywhere! The rest of the drive up was easy enough and the ferry to Sweden was 75 euro's – quite acceptable after the fleecing we suffered over the bridge! 20 minutes later we rolled off into Sweden.

Off the ferry, turn left and head north! We stayed for 4 days at a lovely marina in Falkenberg (of beer/brewery fame) with elekky for 140 skr a night, a lovely sunny spot and also a bank holiday weekend in Sweden - so we stayed put while the locals shuffled around the country. Apparently, as a lady in a shop explained, it was red Tuesday, which acts like a Sunday....we didn't like to mention it was Thursday for seeming rude. The way we understood it, if Tuesday falls on a Thursday, then it's like Sunday and everywhere shuts – simple? Ok.....

Sweden (neither of us had been before) has lovely huge, wide roads – very much like the US, to accommodate their huge trucks (6 leggers pulling a 13 mtr, 5 axle drawbar trailer is normal) so driving here is wonderful, especially in the north, much less traffic.

From Falkenberg we drove all the way up to Oslo, Norway to stay on another camper stop at a marina (yup, right on the edge of town). The trip up was uneventful until we got to Oslo – yikes, it has an underground network of roads/motorways that are like spaghetti junction and very, very busy.

A fantastic camper stop though, in a stunning marina that turned out to be probably the nicest place in Oslo. The town itself, after cycling round it all day, seemed faceless and lacking in character, nearly all new, square buildings save for the dreary town hall, who's interior is a mass of awful paintings and collages – a very strange place both inside and out. Oh well, with Oslo done we decided to head back into Sweden as it is relatively cheaper and certainly nicer to drive around.....

Sweden here we come.....again!
