Looks like our tour of Scotland is on after all..gonna be a rush to organise 3 weeks up there by FRIDAY YIKES! Hoped to do some wildcamping for the odd night or two at various places. I believe they dont mind as long as you stay hidden and quiet...anyone know different? Do let me know please..:001_smile:up via york, newcastle edinburgh abers invers along the top refuel at top most lpg Ullapool and back down west cost with a crossover to Loch ness for 3 or 4 days at a ccc site then back to west coast and loch lomond maybe even OBAN but I seem to remember the roads were tight even for a car... or are they???? Perhaps you know different.:001_smile:

Have a great trip, been years since I have been to Scotland so no advice I'm afraid.

We are currently at Kinlochewe Caravan Club site in The Highlands. Roads are much better than when we were last here 20 years ago. Many single track roads have been upgraded. The single track roads have many passing places and 45ft tag axle coaches travel along them. Like all narrow roads just take your time and be prepared to pull in and stop if a large vehicle approaches and let faster cars overtake when safe to do so.

Apart from one road to a local pub there have been no roads I have travelled on in my car where I would not take my 36ft Camelot. The only proviso being I would not have the car on an A Frame.

Be warned - the midges are still biting and there are many rental motorhomes being driven by drivers who have never driven anything bigger than a Ford Focus.

On the east coast, the most northerly LPG is near Dornoch at Evelix S/Stn (01862 811131) on the main A9(T). Easy access and plenty of space. Ullapool (Lochbroom Garage, Morefield Ind. Est., 01854 613355) is just off the A835 as you come into Ullapool from the north. You will have to ask them to clear the route to the pump in the yard, and you will either have to reverse in or out depending on where your filler is. Recce on foot first, there is an ample layby as you leave the main road just on the left.

We are 37' 6" and always with a toad. We had no problems with the roads. The single track with passing places are a doddle, because everyone sees you coming and knows to pull over and wait for you, or you can stop for them easily. Passing places are arranged so that there are no blindspots. The roads which are two way, but not wide enough are a problem, you just have to be ready to pull over and stop to let the trucks past (they take no prisoners:blushing::blushing:). We did the full loop using all the nearest roads to the coast:- Stonehaven, Aberdeen, Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Speyside CCC Site (01340 810414 ), Nairn, Inverness, Dornoch, Wick, John O'Groats, Durness, Ullapool.

We enjoyed the Loch Ness Holiday Park at Invermoriston (01320 351207) which is actually right on the shore of Loch Ness. No grass, but well compacted pebble gravel, plenty of space, 10Amp EHU and good access for dump and fill.

Itching to go back  (but not for the midges:mad::mad:). You will have a wonderful trip.

Have a great trip, sounds great. You're right about Oban, I was up there about 5 years ago scuba diving and the roads were very tight as I remember.

Hi,firstly, you can't a hide a rv in scotland, especially the further north you go.Caravan club site at Edinburgh (they have a shuttle minibus running from site into city centre) size of rv not a problem.Witches craig at Stirling (phone ahead and speak to Veda and she will look after you.If you decide to head for Oban, then go via Callander and avoid loch lomond side from Tarbert north(normally mad tight but even worse just now with roadworks)North ledaig site in oban with great views.Blair Atholl castle caravan site on the A9 is the only site we have been to with american style drive through style pitches that also have full services.Visit house of bruar for expensive shopping or a great walk at bruar falls.LPG just north of Inverness at Tore services, very easy access even if towing on a frame.Dingwall caravan & camping site were very understanding of the size an rv needs, where we allowed to enter via the exit gate and told to ignore the one way system to allow us to dump waste etc.the warden was very good, although he does shout a bit due to partial deafness I think.Regarding the midgies, east coast is better than the west and not quiet as bad next to the sea or later in the season.Could go on all day,so if you need more info, just ask.cheers Alan.

Great thread

Really interesting info. Makes me want to try Scotland myself, just what the forum is all about.

yes Adrian, I am sat here thinking exactly the same thing! Was last there for any length of time 12 years ago. OMG where has the time gone, just recently spent a week up there but only as far as North Berwick in RV
So i think we would find the experience very different as 12 years ago we were in a Trailer Tent!!:001_smile:

You guys better hurry up and visit Scotland while the border is still open to you lot down there. I fully expect the border to be closed and manned by Jocks in see you Jimmy hats by early September 2014. However the really good news is that I will be able to supply visas ( Cash only )to those of you that I consider worthy ( I,e, no Scousers or Geordies etc, ) I feel that it is the least I can do to foster better relations in the U.K. Cheers Texaswoody.
