Hi,

I am relatively new to this site and it has many good points, ie technical issues and simple questions that I can get answers too.
However, there is one thing puzzling me. There seems to be a good many RV friendly sites posted on this forum for the UK but there are very few for the Continent. It maybe that most forum users stay and travel around the UK but on reading many posts there seems to be a number of RV users traveling abroad, is there any reason I am missing as to why there aren't more RV recommended sites for Europe on this forum?
We are traveling around Europe and it would be useful to know of more sites available. At the moment we spend time between sites on the internet, e mail and phone checking that sites can accommodate us.
I look forward to hearing any ideas or views,
Regards
Neil

Hi Neil,

I am also relatively new to RV'ing, I was in the same position as you looking for sites for my 5TH wheel. There was a good site resource "Big pitch guide" but this has now ceased trading. There is a RV Friendly Campsites link at the top of the page which some members have posted good sites too.

I have made up my own google maps from info gained from different resources and while by no means perfect hopefully will be of some help. I would appreciate any info on sites you have used that are not on my maps.

Hi Neil,

We have just finished out first winter tour of Portugal, and Spain. A sort of anti-clockwise coastal direction from Santander, back to Santander.

We had a few sites, from the ACSI book, and a few from the 'Aires of PT and ES', to look at, but to be honest nothing planned.

Some of the Aires were wonderful, and inexpensive. Some campsites were equally wonderful, others not so.

Some sites we stumbled upon, some were recommended by others on the road. The Portuguese Baragems are jewels.

We have camped on luxurious sites, basic aires, beaches, car parks, industrial estates, lay byes, and even a garage forecourt.

Just wandering, and finding somewhere to stay is exciting, i think. The lay bye, ind est, and garage forecourt, were necessities, not camping. There are some wonderful places out there.

Hi Both,

Thanks for input, much appreciated. I will send a PM to you both with the sites we have stopped on on our travels.

They are all big enough to take us, 10 meters, as a rule of thumb we always e mail and phone if necessary to make sure they have room, some have limit numbers of pitches for big uns.

Again, much appreciate the replies.

Regards

Neil

Hi Neil, we have had trips to Portugal , Spain , France and Belgium and have not booked ahead , we avoid peak season and get a pitch for our thirty footer without a problem.
Booking ahead would be advisable for a long stay.

We've done all of Europe (bar Romania, Greece & Bulgaria (but will have done those too later this year lol)), never booked ahead and always found somewhere to stay comfortably. Only a couple of Aires were too small for us (10.5M) so we shuffled off to another nearby. The Aires books generally indicate which ones can accommodate large RV's but you can squeeze into some of the smaller ones if your lucky. Sadly the biggest bugbear for us is that they [Aires, ACSI, Camperstop & Boardatlas] rarely tell you about over hanging trees - one of the commonest barriers to camping in Europe in an RV.

We thought about uploading all the sites we've visited which can take RV's, but there's so many and it would take us ages - and it's sunny outside

We think gut instinct works better than planning - gut instincts rarely fail.

Interesting posting in a thread titled, 'Big Pitch Guide now defunct', in which Jim makes a very interesting statement, http://www.motorhomefun.co.uk/forum/threads/big-pitch-guide-now-defunct.80637/

"The Big pitch guide was sold and eventually became Park Up magazine. This turned out to be the most amateur affair, they even nicked photos (mine) for the front page. Rather than the labour of love that the Big Pitch Guide used to be, it became an A5 rag produced to about the same professional level and a small church newsletter. Consequently, after taking quite a few subscriptions it disappeared.

One of the strengths of the BPG was that the owner kept it up to date, it is now woefully out of date and not worth bothering with. There will be a digital version out soon, and it will be free to RV Owners Club members."(y)
