In order to get to Slovenia we decided Austria was the best option. At the motorway services in Salzburg I asked for a box. Reg doc with weight was requested. We were going to Villach and back. A charge of 147 Euro on my card and given the box to stick on screen. As you pass various points it beeps once. On return it beeped twice every time a point was passed. Low credit, got off mway and took box in, had 12 euro credit, enough to get to Salzburg. Off mway at Salzburg, took box in and was told other side. How to get across a 6 lane mway? Back to office, how do I cross? There is a road 50 mtrs away, found it, it's for cars, goes under the mway, cars don't need a box. No pedestrians said the sign, ignored it and ran over. They wouldn't take the box, kept telling me I had credit, I kept telling them I don't want box as I am going into Germany. No luck, met a policeman outside, he suggested I might give it back in Germany? Got back to Rv and wrote up the fiasco so could email Go and explain. The next day we left a campsite in Germany, got on mway and 50 miles later saw a Go sign at the services. Took box in, it was taken and the credit went back on card. Cost to cross and return 138 Euro. If you cheated and got a vignette, for vehicles under 3500 kgs, and cheap, got stopped and paperwork checked, very large fine. Also diesel in Austria was 1.79 Euro, camped once, most expensive at 23 Euro. If we go again, it will be via north Italy.

Hi Peter thanks for that write up, do you know roughly how many miles you got for your €138?

Go Box and mileage

Just put the two points into Autoroute, very shocking, only 220 miles. It would be cheaper in a newer vehicle that has an emission class. We will not cross Austria again.

Flipping heck that's about 62p per mile!

That's so dear I thought I would check and found this site: http://www.asfinag.at/go-box-vehicles-over-3.5t-gross-weight which at the worst says .187 cents per kilometre +20% vat = .224 (No Euro Emission class) 220 miles is about 366 kilometres, so .224*366=€82.13

Do you get charged rental on the box? Or is my maths crap as usual.

Just had a re calc on the mileage, from beginning of Austrian Mway to exit into Slovenia is 133 miles. The Euro rate made it £108 for the trip which works out at 40p a mile. However the stay in Bled, Slovenia was excellent, the camping was £12 per night, cheap fuel, 1.22 Euro a litre, red wine 70p for 2 litres, beer was very cheap as was food in the supermarket. If we go again it's north Italy both ways. We also stopped and fuelled in Luxembourg going and on return for cheap fuel and camping. £12 a night inc electric and free wifi.

Go box

Looks like avoid Austria

To avoid Austria would be a shame! It really is a stunning country.
Some of the roads do have restrictions on them mainly 7.5t.
We purchased a Go box to do some motorway travel but used other roads also.
The Go box is a very simple system and very effective. The minimum amount is 80E to put on the box plus 5E to Rent it.
