Winter watering holes

Hi everyone,

Our plan is to spend most of the winter, e.g. Oct/Nov - Mar/Apr in Southern Europe.
Southern Spain/Portugal seem to be favourite with many members, but, where are your favourites and why?

We’ve not been abroad in our RV yet but we are determined NOT to spend another winter in the UK, so how best to book and what deals are available for long term stayers? Where do we start?

Any advice grafefully received.

We would also be interested in answers to this as its our plan to winter so where warmer ( eventually ) reckon we have about 761 sleeps till then though.

We and cat will be in the canaries.

Have not set the set off day yet. Weather and temp related.

Kent to Cornwall (see family) (Sept- Oct)
Cornwall to Plymouth to get boat to Santander.
Santander to Portugal (stay a month or until temp cools, then back into spain and boat to Tenerife

Cost far too much to put in text format.
We do step at time, so costs are never combined.
Between 5 to 6 thousand last winter (Dec- March)

Hope that helps

Algarve is good, having said that last winter was a bit abnormal. A few weeks of very wet weather.
Prefer slightly north of the main tourist area as it is now getting very busy.
We are looking at buying land in the central area as a more permanent base to tour from.
Best wishes to all on their travel plans.

That would be good thanks. People we have spoken to say the Algarve is the place to spend the winter.

There is a big site called Camping Olhão just outside the town. It is plenty big enough for RV’s, has good facilities and an on site bar, pool etc. The EHU isn’t wonderful, we found it tripped out a lot. You can walk into town from there, it is a bit of a hike tho but there is a bus stop outside and taxis cost €5. GPS 37.03528, -7.8225

The other one is called Canto do Sol and is a very small but secure site on the road to Quelfes about 2km out of Olhão. The proprietor is a lady called Anna, who is very friendly but doesn’t speak much English. The facilities here are basic, showers, toilet and washing up plus 2 washing machines. There is good EHU. There is room for an RV but it mainly caters for Eurovans. We left our RV here for 8 months and flew back and forth. GPS N 37.04634, W 7.83972
N 37°02'47", W 7°50'23"

Alternatively you can wild camp in the town. There is a piece of waste ground next to the 5* Marina Hotel on the seafront which is always full of campers. Also at the other end of this main seafront road (Avenida 5 de Outubro) opposite the fishing harbour on Avenida 16 de Junho, there is another smaller area which always has campers on it.

Enjoy the sunshine

Or alternatively you can wild camp at Barragems (reservoirs) and enjoy the freedom of the great outdoors in a vehicle that is designed to allow you to live in comfort without any Frenchman accusing you of stealing his sunshine or German informing you that the rules state you cannot have bonfires or cook on BBQs if the wind is blowing in his direction... Many thanks. We are wardens at a site on Mersea Island in Essex.
We would be very keen to discuss the land option and gain insight from you.
Due to work commitments we are unable to visit the rally's at this time :-(
However we do get 4 months off each year so should not really complain.
Will pm you our details so we may chat.
Once again many thanks
Best wishes
John and Dawn
