Breakdown insurance in Europe for winter

We insure with Safeguard and breakdown is included for 365 days. We have had to call them out twice, once in the U.K. and once in France this year and both times they have got us out of trouble without too much fuss.

We leave on Tuesday on the ferry to Santander and then heading south for Cartagena. Depending on Brexit we plan on coming back next June so we’ll keep an eye open for you fellow continental travellers.

    Coming Home

We have been in Europe for 9 months now and are making our way back to the U.K. We are at Le Pin Parasol on the Vendee which is a fabulous site for €18 a night with ACSI and plenty of big pitches. We have the ferry booked Cherbourg to Poole at the end of the month and then straight round to see...

    Safeguard AA breakdown Europe

Just out of interest we broke down in France about four weeks ago and had to be towed off the motorway at a cost of €1200. Safeguard Insurance organised everything via the AA Breakdown Service and paid the bill direct and we have an A Class Thor Windsport.

    Broken down in France!

Hi Gareth, Gemini Cat 1. The garage that fitted it said it was impossible for the immobiliser to kick in whilst driving so that slowed us up for a couple of days. It was only when I phoned Gemini direct that I found out it could happen!

No, all part of the adventure. We are alongside a beautiful lake today so I’m going fishing!

    Broken down in France!

Latest update - we are On the Road Again. After lots of probing, checking, jumper wires and swearing over the weekend I followed Adie’s advice and contacted the manufacturer of our alarm/immobiliser system, although I had previously spoken to the company who fitted it and was assured that the...

    Broken down in France!

I have found all the wiring diagrams and Service manuals for the Workhorse chassis at IRV2.com - a goldmine of information if you can understand it! So let’s hope the Frenchman can figure it out as there are 54 sheets.

    Broken down in France!

Yes I think it is a sensor or relay or other component failure that caused the power loss. I don’t know enough about vehicle electrics but when you turn the key the electric must go to specific places, like the starter motor and spark plugs, and if it doesn’t then what is stopping it? Maybe...

    Broken down in France!

Hi David and thank you for your suggestions but I’m not sure either of these would cause total immediate power failure as we were travelling on the motorway and had been for approx. 2 hours but I will check everything.

    Broken down in France!

Hi Olley, thank you very much for these diagrams. The year is about the same and it’s an A class RV so I guess there will be similarities- anything is better than nothing,

I like that thought Arthur, a phone call on Monday along with one to the immobiliser manufacturer to see if they can offer a solution.

    Broken down in France!

Yeah I’m suspicious about that! Been in touch with the company who fitted it and they said no way was it the problem- but I’m still suspicious!

    Broken down in France!

Hi Olley, just bypassed the chassis disconnect solenoid in the BCC and it didn’t make any difference. I also doubted it was that as I have all the lights on the dash and driving lights, but I had to try it. Didn’t know about the fuses under the dash so just been and checked them and they are all...

    Broken down in France!

Yes I agree with you and we have been telling the AA who are our breakdown service in France that we need an auto electrician but they don’t seem to grasp that idea. A proper auto electrician would start at the beginning and trace where the power broke down, the guy we got checked the fuses...
