HI All,

We have a summer trip planned to Norway in mid July. We are crossing on the Dover to Dunkirk Ferry, stopping the first night in Brugge and because we have Teenagers a trip next day to Efteling theme park, then a general idea to wander up through Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Then a tour of the fjords and back. Hopefully all in around 3 weeks. I have had some ideas from our member Norway but now looking for specific stop overs and suggested routes. It is about 1100 miles to Norway, but do not want to get there quicker by using ferries as in my opinion that is what an RV is for "Driving" all suggestions gratefully received.

Sounds great, This is something we would like to do sometime, Our friends have been Rv for many years and have done it all but due to bad health that has come to a end.

Make the most of the travelling as thats what we like to do, can not see the point of rushing to a site and staying there for months on end..We like to cross the water by the shorest route and the driving/travelling is part of the trip.

Keep us all updated on your trip and do not forget the Photo's...:001_smile:

presumably you are crossing into Sweden via the Øresund Bridge:001_cool: heard its not cheap but would love to do that. depending on how old your teenagers are you might want to visit the real LEGOLAND at billund, den.
this time of year there are many many American car shows in Norway and Sweden with cheap camping thrown in, motorama is the expert in this area and may give you tips if your into this sort of thing:thumbup:

Well worth a PM to Sundowners Nigel and Pamala - they have done Norway before and I believe may be going again this year - they are seasoned travellers with a lot of knowledge - they may see this thread but I have not seen them post for a week or two

Øresund bridge will cost you around 90 pounds :( On the other hand, so do the ferry.

If you like fjords Geiranger is a must. During the summer they have a ferry, just leave the Rv and take a return trip and you have a guidet tour:001_smile:

if its ideas that you want and being that I am of german ancestry , I would say give Germany a miss, the north is to industrialised anyhows. if your doing dover Calais or thereabouts then brugge is a nice place for a stopover. never camped there but its a nice day out, same with Holland, Amsterdam, Arnhem, Nijmegen all good fun and only a good half days or so drive form the Danish border:001_smile:

maybe 30 years camping with bikes etc but last 5 in RV, old bones and all that. Still do the ocassio
You must do the bridge just for the length and view. it is absolutely spectacular. its so long you get 1/2 way and theres no land visable behind or in front.
We have been several times across on bikes and the first time when we had crossed I asked Sue what she thought of the small island farm 1/2 way across, "what farm" she said. Was so scared by the wind she had ridden across like a blinkered horse.
We have travelled a fair amount in Denmark Sweden right up to Finland.
I think the only thing is the further north you go the less towns people and traffic there is which is great, but after a few days lakes and trees do get monotonous.
But you will thoroughly enjoy, I guarantee.

the first time we stayed in Sweden (on the outskirts of town) we had a hire car, one day we decided to leave the car at the hotel and catch a bus into the center of Stockholm.
we waited 10 minutes and the bus came exactly on time.
anyhows we could,nt get on the bus because we did,nt have tickets and according to the bus driver the nearest place to get tickets was at the train station (10 minutes away) or the hotel we were staying in (5 minutes away). we went back to the hotel and the tickets they sold were week long passes and not worth paying for, for the sake of a days travel.
so we jumped in the hire car and just drove. we ended up in a little coastal town some 80 miles north of Stockholm, were they had a small village fate type thing going on and a fund raising party for the local lifeboat. we had a great time and tbh we were glad we could,nt get on their poxy bus.

sometimes it just pays to follow your nose:thumbup:

Hi, Sundowners and Flatpackchicken left for Norway on Sunday, catching the boat from Travemund to Malmo. This saves transiting Denmark and the cost of the ferry and bridge which is damned expensive if over 3.5 tons. I hope to leave for above the Arctic Circle in about a fortnight and with luck should meet up with them on route. I have driven up to Flakstadvag several times in the summer and fished at this fish camp, http://www.flakstadvaag-camp.no/eng_galleri.html . I will be travelling via Travemund Trelleborg and then up through Sweden crossing over into Norway above the circle. This saves on the cost of fuel and provisions in Norway which is very expensive. The round trip should take about 8 weeks as although the roads are fairly good up there, there are few if any motorways. To the OP, if you are thinking of travelling far in Norway, 3 weeks is not enough, unless you want to spend the whole time behind the wheel. 150 miles per day in Norway can be a good days work, and 100 is about the norm in an RV. Its not advisable to drive after dark because of the wild animals wandering around in the road. A moose can do a lot of damage to an RV. Wild camping is allowed anywhere in Norway by law so even though the campsites are expensive you don't have to use them. There are many bus conversions used as RVs in Scandinavia so theres no problems with large RVs generally. Contrary to many beliefs the weather above the circle is very good after about the second week of June, but be prepared for the flying teeth after the start of August, those damned things will eat you alive unless you are well covered. It does not go dark after the July so be prepared to sleep when tired not by the clock. As said there are loads of American car shows and BBQs going on through the summer, most of which are free. Its a great country and the people are very friendly so am sure you will enjoy it, but take your time and dont be in a hurry. Dont forget your fishing rods.
