Default Syphoning Water Tank

Ok people, here is a problem for you. When ever I fill my Winnie up with fresh water, I do it until it runs out of the overflow, as per instructions. The problem is that the overflow continues to run and drains the tank down to about one third, before it stops. The overflow is a hard pipe so I cannot take the end up above the water level to stop it. Any ideas how to sort this out ? Am I doing something wrong ? Thanks

It's only a guess--but-- it sounds to me like the overflow pipe goes quite low down ito the tank ???----could be VERY hard to get to where the pipe goes in !!!--------------I would imagine it would be easier to tap into the overflow pipe and take it higher ?????

We had a similar problem with our 5'er when we bought it - the guy at Niche
altered the pipe to a flexible and took it up to floor level then bought it out to air and that stopped most of the problem - it would appear that on underfloor tanks the tank is clamped up against the inner floor level so the overflow is cut into the side of the tank not the top as you would expect. This means that not only can you not fill the tank fully any lean or movement on the vehicle dumps water. Now we can get it to show full on the gauge and we dont leave a trail of water behind

i assume you imported yourself so a dealer fix is out of the question.

would it be possible to fit a second overflow to the tank, at the correct hieght, and blank off the original ?

even if fitted at the upper side it would be better than you have now.

Thanks for that. No it was bought from Dudley's but before I got back to there and as we are off tommorrow for the Chrismas period, I was looking for a simple, instant fix. I will try getting a length of flexible onto the overflow stub, underneath, to get it above the top of the tank, along the lines of Sundowners idea.

Hi Mike

Both of these solutions assume you can get to the bottom of the overflow, one attach a flexible pipe onto the bottom of the overflow feed it back up above the tank that will stop it syphoning.

A more permanent fix but possibly not possible at short notice fit a stop cock or tap on the bottom of the overflow on while filling when it when the tank is full and it's flowing turn it off.

Hope this helps a bit Rick.

Two issues I can forsee with this fix - the tank is filled with low temperature water and as it warms up to air temperature it will pressurise the tank and the complete water system with possible dire results and you would need the overflow / vent open to allow you to draw off water, otherwise as the pump pulled water out it would collapse the tank due to a vacuum.

Oh shute good point and me a motor engineer, you are quite right it would need another breather to be fitted to the tank so not a good fix thanks Landy Lover for reading my post and putting it right.

Now I feel a real pratt I should have known better, I do have man flu at present can I blame that?

All the best Rick

Rick, i myself being perfect i would have blamed it on the change of life.. Or perhaps old age if it applies... But man flue does it for me

Me? I know nothing...... No suggestions i regret... As it is a 2010... I would take it back to Dudley's they are the importer and should be able to fix it i would have thought... That is why you buy a new RV from those that are the
UK importers.

Hope you get it fixed soon as i am sure it is a pain in the bum.

Bob
