Default Warning - Virus Alert from moandick

Would all members please note that the email address: moandick@aol.com has been hi-jacked by some form of 'low-life' who has stolen my entire address book from that email address.

For the last few days up until today, people have been telling me that they have had some strange advertising mail from my AOL address - today, I have just been informed by a member that he has just been infected with a virus from my address - so can anybody and everybody who might have reason to open an email from: moandick@aol.com -

PLEASE DO NOT DO SO!

Early this year I paid a small fortune for anti-virus programmes and security protection for all of my computer network - all apparently to no avail - because somebody has managed to 'hack' into my network and is now spreading a virus called 'Security Shield'

In big bold letter I can only apologize for any inconvenience caused - I have done everything I can to protect myself and others - but these animals seem to think it is funny to do this sort of thing - Lord help them if I ever find out who they are!

Advice from any experts on here who can advise me how to divorce myself from this email address - so that nobody else can be affected would be seriously welcomed!

Dick

Talking Had it myself

My AOL accout at various times sends e mail out as if from me.. When i have not sent any... No longer have an address book, but still happens... Lts of people get e mails offering them viagra.. It comes from Canadian Health Product ... My son in law is also on aol ( and no i have not set him any e mails) he has the same problems... So it happens, nothing any of us can do anything about it.. People soon get to understand it is not from you.

If you ever find out how to get over the problem i would love to know...

Bob

Hi Dick don't beat yourself up over it, AOL is known for giving problems. I wouldn't be surprised if the vulnerability is at AOL, not your computer. Never used AOL so can't give any advice on it, but suggest you change to yahoo or Gmail. But no email will be 100% hacker proof, even the Banks and military have been hacked.

I got the email, but the link was dead.

Hi Olley

I have used AOL for nearly 30 years originally in my private life but lately I have only really used it on the BPG.

For personal use I changed to Gmail some time ago - and have only ever had one problem - and that was caused by 'Facebook' which I have since deleted and banished into the realms of cyber-space.

Anyway, now the problem has been high-lighted and (apart from my lost address book), everything is going back to normal - Mo and I send our very best wishes that everybody has a:

A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Default AOL !88888!""!"$&&%$

Hi

AOL robbed me of tons of money back in 2004/5. the ONLY way I got rid was to change my BANK ACCOUNT!!!. I made the mistake of setting up an account to use when we where over in the USA, and They continued taking $15 per month for an account I had repeatedly told them I could no longer use and wanted CLOSING!

They just IGNORE any representations you may make. It so easy to SET UP but try closing it?. No way Jose!!.

Pete

Merry christmas to one and all from Houston Texas

Hi Dick

I'm not an IT professional nor do I claim to be an "expert" (hasbeen drip under pressure) but have been around computers for many years. It is well nigh impossible to stop email hijackers because of the amount of computer power they throw at it. Anti-virus software will not protect you either, although some internet security suites are better at it than others. I recommend AVG as it was recommended by Steve Gibson of Gibson Research (see www.grc.com) but applications such as Spybot - Search and Destroy and Adaware will root out any programs that are sending your personal information to unauthorised third parties.

You have a business domain name for the Big Pitch Guide so you should be able to get several email addresses from your web host as part of that package. They should also give you a better level of protection from email hijackers than you'll get from an ISP. If you can't then I would consider changing your web host as there are lots of reasonably priced business packages out there.

A lot of the anti-spyware programs can be downloaded and used for free, even if they are only 30-day trial versions. It is also important that you download them from a trusted source such as www.cnet.co.uk or www.zdnet.co.uk.

I hope this helps a bit.

Regards,

Archie

Thanks for that, Archie - I have already downloaded 'spybot' to add to my inventory - as well as 'Registry Tool' and I am now going to look for AVG.

I use "Norton 360" on my desktop and "Mcafee" on my laptops - as well as now looking into a brand new one which PC World have just suggested to replace Mcafee - but I cannot for the life of me remember its name!

On top of all that I am now opening the email system through my web site but it will take a moment or two to change the Paypal address etc.

Once again the help that I have obtained through this forum has been invaluable - and I am very grateful for it

Dick

Hi Dick after a recommend from a couple of guru's on facts, I have changed to "Microsoft Security Essentials" for antivirus, its free from Microsoft.

I was using AVG but it allowed one of our shop computors to get a virus, only using "Malwarebytes" and downloading and running MSE did I manage to get rid of it.
